Makeover Tips For Your Home Garage

  • Begin by setting a date for cleaning out your garage, holding a garage sale or a donation pick-up. If you put it in the classifieds or make a commitment then you will be sure to follow through with your project. Setting a weekend for this project is the perfect time. You can make it a fun event and have family and friends help.
  • Once the date is set, start by sorting everything in the garage into separate piles: a) things you want to keep; b) things you can get rid of; c) and things you want to donate. When you have determined what to keep, divide that pile into sections such as holiday, sports, car maintenance, house maintenance, etc.
  • After you have decided what to keep in your garage categorize the items. Some typical categories are: recycling, sports equipment, camping/fishing gear, automotive, holiday decorations, arts & crafts, garden tools, etc. Store often-used items such as garden tools where they can be easily seen. If you can see it, you can find it. Make use of vertical space with "Gridwall" or “Slatwall” organizer to achieve easy access and prioritize all equipment in the most appropriate location in your garage.
  • Use overhead space for storing items used infrequently. Items such as holiday decorations and luggage can be stored in higher cabinetry or Overhead Storage Racks to allow for more eye-level or easy-access storage space for frequently used items. The key here is to free up floor space and use all available space effectively.
  • Use clear plastic bins or tote with a closing top that are stackable and clearly labeled. This will eliminate clutter of small items and can "compartmentalize" items by category or use. These containers can also help maximize the storage space inside your cabinets.
