How to Tile a Vanity

How to Tile a Vanity
A tiled vanity top isn't reserved for a luxe lifestyle. Get this artisanal look in your home with our instructions.

A tiled vanity gives your bathroom a designer look without completely redesigning the whole room. If you plan to tile a bathroom wall, tiling the vanity will make the vanity and sink an integral part of the space.
Even if your existing base cabinet is in good condition, you'll have to build up the top. Commercial vanity countertops are made to handle less weight. Remove the top and add bracing, a 3/4-inch plywood base, and polyethylene waterproofing membrane.
Buy the tile for all the surfaces you'll be tiling — vanity tile, wall tile, and bullnose trim. That way you can be more certain of getting tiles of a consistent color throughout the entire project. Make sure the cartons have the same lot number.
Select the right tile to use on your vanity. Use glazed tile 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick. Purchase a sink whose texture matches the glaze — vitreous china and enameled cast iron are good choices. Self-rimming sinks are easy to install, and the rim will cover the rough edges of the cut tile.

GARAGE FLOOR EPOXY- TIPS AND TRICKS

Garage Floor Epoxy Tips and Tricks
Because DIY garage floor epoxy paint kits purchased at your favorite home improvement center are still very popular, we like to inform our readers of the realities of these products and what to expect. Occasionally we come across a great article that someone has written about epoxy coatings or past experience with a specific product and we like to share that information. Bellow is on such article about a husband and wife who used a professional version of Rust-Oleum’s epoxy coating kit that they installed themselves.

Though this couple did make some mistakes, they are happy with the outcome overall and offer some very valuable tips if they were to do it over again. The most important tip that you can take from their experience is to trust the directions of the product you are using. Directions are there for a reason and are not considered “general guidelines” to follow. Also, be aware of the what some epoxy companies claim about ease of installation.
They did note how slippery the floor became when wet. If you live in a climate where this may be a concern, an anti-slip additive such as Shark Grip would be a good option to improve wet performance and reduce any slip hazards.
When shopping for garage floor epoxy, they chose to purchase the professional version of the Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield kits. Though they are a bit more expensive, they are a much better value for the money than the standard water-based kits. The professional kit is solvent-based and provides for a coating that is more durable and thicker as well. You can read some good reviews and get pricing on Rust-Oleum Professional Epoxy kits here.
It’s also important to know the differences in epoxy before you make a purchase. Many people confuse epoxy coatings with paint and vice versa. Taking a few minutes to educate yourself about these differences can help to ensure that you purchase the correct product for the job.
As a final note, don’t confuse these DIY kits with the much higher performing commercial quality coatings that are available today. Though these kits do serve their purpose for an economical floor coating, they will not replicate the performance and durability of the higher quality garage floor coating systems.

Create the Man Cave of His Dreams

Create the Man Cave of His Dreams

A Custom Garage Cabinet Design Makes Your Garage More Functional - Garages are historically over-crowded and under-used. With planned storage and organization, your garage will become valuable living space. Customize with color and accessories to create your ideal garage.
What type of Man Cave would best suit your man?
  • A sports center with home gym or weight bench surrounded by game and sports paraphernalia like trophies and team memorabilia?
  • A workbench with a spacious countertop and easily accessible tools for handyman tasks, DIY projects and hobbies?
  • A media center with big screen TV, recliner, DVD player, internet and snack bar?
  • A game space with a putting green, pool table, poker table or arcade games?
  • A showplace for custom or vintage cars or motorcycles?
  •
A Man Cave will be as unique as the man that inhabits it. As a place for a man to enjoy his own pursuits, a Man Cave could have one theme or several combined. Bottom line…he’ll want his own things about him and probably a recliner or two. A combination of garage cabinets, Gridwall racks (steel grids) or Slatwall (PVC panels), overhead storage and garage shelving will get your garage under control and free up the space to build that ideal Man Cave. Add a custom garage floor as the finishing touch and he can move right in!
  • For the sports enthusiast, Gridwall or Slatwall systems provide wall storage with specialty hooks for large items like bikes, skis, skateboards and golf bags. Accessory baskets and shelves hold smaller items such as balls, helmets and shoes. Garage cabinets and shelves create the perfect place for storing and displaying collectibles and trophies to inspire him as he works out.
  • For the handyman needing a place to work with his hands, upper and lower cabinets with an integrated countertop, lights and adjustable racks above the workspace will keep tools organized and easy to find for any home improvement project or hobby. He’ll have the luxury of leaving any unfinished projects out until he returns, or they can be hidden behind closed doors.
  • A garage entertainment center could be an element in any Man Cave. Along with movies and sports viewing, a TV is good company when working out, enjoying a hobby, reading or just relaxing. Custom garage cabinets could house the TV, DVD player, movies, books, magazines, a private stash of favorite snacks and maybe even a popcorn popper. Add a recliner and seating for friends, and the Man Cave is complete.
  • A gaming area such as a putting green or pool table would definitely require that the rest of the garage was maximized for storage space. A wall or two of garage cabinets and wall storage systems will provide the storage space for everything else in the garage and free up enough space for indoor play. PremierTrax flexible flooring tiles can color code the different usage areas in the garage to ensure no trespassing.
  •
  • Floor-to-ceiling Garage Utilize All Available Space- Silver Frost cabinets, Granite powder-coated doors and a stainless steel; counter top create maximum work and storage space, as seen on the Property Brothers at Home on HGTV.

Counter Area Solutions

At PremierGarage we offer several solutions for counter areas. We will review all options with you very carefully to best determine how this area should be set up so that it properly accommodates everyone that may use this area. You can select from standard base cabinets, 1 drawer + 1 door combination, regular drawers, deep drawers, kneespace, etc. Our goal is to make sure your counter areas are set up to allow for maximum functionality.

You will also have the opportunity to select 3 different options of counter tops. 1) Our standard black counter top has rounded edges with rubber T-molding for a clean look while eliminating sharp edges. This also provides some protection from items banging into the edges; 2) We also provide butcher block counter tops made from solid maple and sealed with a clear varnish finish; 3) Another option is the Stainless Steel counter top which is made from 16-guage stainless steel which is a 1 ½ inch thick design with welded corners and a brushed finish to add a contemporary or industrial look to any counter area.

Use Overhead Space Wisely

The garage ceiling is a great spot for hanging long, flat stuff you don't use every day, such as ladders and seasonal sports gear. Make sure that any shelves you hang from the ceiling don't interfere with your garage door's operation and that there is enough clearance to avoid scraping the roof of your car.

Clearing The Toy Clutter

It's easy to control clutter if you remember that the four walls of your garage are actually four more floors. With the right shelves and hooks, you can actually quadruple your storage space.

Sterilite makes a collection of some of the sturdiest plastic storage products available. One of them is a shelving unit that can be assembled in about 30 seconds; each shelf will hold 50 pounds. It only costs about $30.

Storage totes are great because they hold everything and they keep it all dry. If you have kids or pets, though, drill a hole in the tote. If the kids are goofing around and get stuck inside, that hole will be a very good thing.

Going Green in the Garage

Instead of shopping for a bunch of bins and boxes, create storage out of things you already have. It's the green way to store stuff.

Old jars get a new purpose as storage for screws, nails and other small items. Use a screw or two to attach the top of the jar to the underside of a shelf. Fill the jar with whatever, and screw the jar onto its top.

Pegboards are another storage classic. They're great because you can see everything; the tools aren't lost in a drawer somewhere. If you want, you can draw the outline of the tools on the pegboard; that way, you can tell at a glance if one is missing and could be in use building a tree fort.

A metal bow rake that's lost its handle can gain a new life in the garage. Remove most of the handle, drill a pilot hole through the remainder and screw it to the wall. It's perfect for hanging your garden tools.

Tips for Organizing a Garage

If your car is out on the street because there's no room for it in the garage, it's time to get organized. Here are some tips and tools to make it happen. Safety First: Learn the best ways to store that hazardous stuff we all keep in the garage: the chemicals, the paint cans and pesticides.

Chemicals are the No. 1 danger. A lot of people keep pesticides, paints and auto fluids, often in old food containers, which can leak and cause fumes, burns, respiratory problems and fire hazards. Always store such substances in their original containers and out of reach of children, on a high shelf or in a locked cabinet. Chemicals that are poisonous to pets are a huge problem. Road salt and ice-melt mixtures can get on the paws of cats and dogs and cause diarrhea and vomiting. Antifreeze, in particular, is highly dangerous and can be fatal. It has a sweet smell that attracts pets; as little as 1 tablespoon can kill a cat; half a cup can kill a dog. Be sure to wipe up any spills immediately, and keep antifreeze out of reach for children, too.
